Spare Time Machine
release date: 11 Jun 2007 // label: Catskills

Any record is a glimpse into the mind of the musician that made it and
'Spare Time Machine’ takes you deep into the reason that weak people
shouldn’t take acid. This album contains more colour, more vision and
more imagination than any five albums made in the 'aughties and then
some.

As a throwback to the early psych classics it brings memories
of Love, Small Faces, Herman’s Hermits, The Beatles and so many more.
Suddenly touches of Hendrix or Donovan, go-go beats and Annette
Funicello on the beach, even King Crimson at their peak – so much
thrown into a small space and the result is a an explosion of aural
images so bright and colourful you should be listening through Ray-Bans.

The
taster for this – 'The Mischief of Cloud Six’ – was a breath of fresh
air on a relatively dull scene but the remainder of the album takes on
from 'Mischief..’ and moves your expectations from moment to moment
until you have no idea what will be round the next corner.
The
last time I can remember anything like this was Swindon’s finest, XTC,
in their guise as 'The Dukes of Stratosfear’ but they played it for
their own amusement. This sounds for real.

It is pointless to
suggest tracks to be listened to in isolation – this is designed to be
listened to as a whole and works at every level – but if 'Pussy Cat
Rock’ isn’t the next single the summer will be the less for it.
