release date: 19 Mar 2007 // label: Soma reviewer: Rich Denton
Formed in the early '90s as the trio of Ken Downie, Ed Handley, and Andy Turner, The Black Dog are widely regarded as pioneers of the UK 'intelligent’ techno scene. Their productions are varied, combining experimental techno, electro, jazz-infused hip-hop and old skool breaks. Their tracks set them apart from other techno producers of the time and brought remix work for the likes of Bjork, Elbow and UNKLE along the way. As the original vinyl copies were only pressed in limited numbers, Soma records have had the sense to compile this retrospective double CD for today’s audience. Digitally remasted this compilation fully showcases a back catalogue dating back to 1989.
CD1 opens with the 9 minute epic 'Vitual’ and the hugely cinematic 'The Weight’. The rest of the tracks shift between the styles and make disc one the more easy on the ear. Although CD2 is less melodic and concentrates more on a purer techno sound, 'Parallel’ and 'Hub are for me the stand out tracks on the disc.
As with any retrospective collection - especially one covering eighteen years ' some tracks show their age but there is enough quality here to make this release a significant one. It will also give access to a sound that recently has only been available to the most avid and wealthy of record collectors.
